Re-using that Swiffer WetJet bottle

One of the biggest home renos that I wish I had done something different, was the choice of our flooring on the main floor and the bedrooms.  We opted for an engineered floor, as our rec room is on concrete and we knew we couldn't apply hardwood flooring over the concrete.  We also choose a dark wood.

The issue is the finish on the floor, which is very delicate and scratches very easily.  Also, it is very hard to keep clean and I fell like I could probably wash the floor every day (which I don't).

I recently saw a post on Pinterest that you can remove the cap on those Swiffer wet bottles and refill them with your choice of cleaner.

This is the bottle that I used.  Here are the instructions.

1.  Boil some water in a pot.
2.  Submerge the cap in the boiling water for 10 seconds.
3.  Attempt to remove cap (use a cloth, cap will be hot)
4.  If it doesn't turn and open, dip again

I had to dip it twice to get it to open.  Essentially the hot water appears to weaken/melt the teeth that is holding it in place and from turning to open.

Fill with whatever floor cleaner you want.  Make your own, or use something other than Swiffer WetJet.

I use Murphy's oil, which I bought at Dollarama for $2.  It seams to work pretty good on the floors and it's 98% natural.  You just have to make sure that you don't leave it too wet on the floor, or it will leave streaks.

Mix the solution according to the instructions.

I used the swiffer pad (as I still had some on hand) and I just kept wiping it to make sure that the floor wasn't too wet after spraying the solution and wiping the floors clean.

So go ahead and re-use that Swiffer bottle and don't waist your money on another Swiffer WetJet bottle when you can make your own.
